Liverpool Midfielder Self-Isolates After Positive Test

Thiago Missed Monday Night Victory Against Arsenal

Thiago impressed on his league debut against Chelsea on September 20 after coming off the bench, despite conceding a penalty after being judged to have impeded Timo Werner.

He was absent from the Liverpool squad for their 3-1 win over Arsenal yesterday (September 29), with the club confirming today on Twitter the news about the midfielder.

A statement said: “Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently self-isolating according to the necessary guidelines.

“The club has, and will continue to follow, all protocols relating to COVID-19 and Thiago will remain in self-isolation for the required period of time.”

It is not known if Thiago tested positive in the most recent round of Premier League testing, which took place between September 21 and September 27.

Liverpool’s club doctor, Jim Moxton, has said: “It is the choice of each individual whether they reveal publicly the outcome of a COVID-19 test.

“We have followed all the protocols to the letter and Thiago is OK. He will be self-isolating now as per the guidelines and hopefully, he’ll be back with us soon.”

The Premier League announced on Monday that ten players or staff members tested positive for coronavirus in the latest round of testing, which is the highest number of cases so far.

West Ham manager David Moyes is amongst those self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus. Issa Diop and Josh Cullen also tested positive for COVID-19 at West Ham.

Liverpool will host Arsenal again on Thursday in the Carabao Cup round of 16 before travelling to Villa Park for a Premier League fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Because Thiago has tested positive for coronavirus, it is expected that he will miss both fixtures.

The 2019-20 champions are currently second in the Premier League table after three matches behind Leicester City.

They are one of only four clubs to have won all of their Premier League matches this season alongside Leicester, Everton and Aston Villa.
