REPORT: Bayern Munich Contact Mario Gotze Over Return Following Borussia Dortmund Release

Bayern Munich have reportedly made contact with their former midfielder Mario Gotze over a return to the club. Bild’s Christian Falk reports that Bayern boss Hansi Flick called Gotze, who left Borussia Dortmund for a second time this summer, to discuss a move, and it is supposedly not the first call that the pair have had.

Flick Wants Reinforcements

Despite a stunning start to the Bundesliga campaign, which saw Bayern demolish Schalke 8-0 on the opening day, Flick reportedly wants to bolster his squad before the transfer window closes.

This summer, Bayern have seen Thiago Alcantara leave for Liverpool, and Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Perisic and Alvaro Odriozola return to Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid respectively at the end of their loan spells.

All that has been brought in to offset those departures is Leroy Sane from Manchester City and teenager Tanguy Nianzou Kouassi from Paris Saint-Germain. While they are talented players in their own right, the departures have still left Bayern short in some areas.

While Flick is pushing to bring Gotze back, Falk also reports that Bayern board members Karl-Heinze Rummenigge and Hasan Salimhadidzic have so far refused the idea.

Gotze would still command a high wage, which could be a risk due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, unlike the first time he moved to Bavaria, he would not command a transfer fee, which is why Flick is keen to do the deal.

Falk suggests that Gotze would be willing to accept a “significant” cut in his salary in order to re-join the club, while a one-year contract with the option to extend it further would be ideal for both parties.
