It was a successful first Bundesliga match for Borussia Dortmund. American forward Giovanni Reyna helped lift the German club to victory as he scored and drew a penalty in the 3-0 result. This was an early-season test for Dortmund as Borussia Mönchengladbach were a side who finished fourth in the table last season.
Dortmund’s victory was one of the many highlights from Saturday’s action in the Bundesliga. Here’s a look at the Dortmund success along with other key moments from the first Saturday of matches in the 2020/21 season.
Gio Reyna Lifts Borussia Dortmund to Victory
Reyna the Latest Youngster to Star
The vast amount of young talent Dortmund possesses continues to produce for the club. Four of their young stars were instrumental in their victory over Mönchengladbach. While Reyna scored and drew a penalty, Jude Bellingham registered the assist on his first-half goal. The young English player scored in the DFB-Pokal earlier in the week and produced another fine performance in his Bundesliga debut.
Star striker Erling Braut Haaland got in on the scoring as well with his successful spot-kick conversion and fine finish in the second half to open his goal account for the season. Jadon Sancho was the player who assisted on Haaland’s second goal of the match with a splendid run and pass to the Norwegian goal scorer.
Dortmund appear to be firing on all cylinders as the season begins. They defeated their DFB-Pokal opponents Duisburg comfortably and were the deserved victors against Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga opener. It’s shaping up to be a special season if they continue to display this strong form throughout the coming months of the season.
Kramaric Can’t Stop Scoring
Hoffenheim were helped out by their lethal goalscorer Andrej Kramaric in a 3-2 win against FC Köln. The Croatian scored the second Bundesliga hat-trick of the weekend. His last goal of the match proved to be the difference as he scored in the 92nd minute to give Hoffenheim all three points in their first match of the campaign.
Kramaric has now scored eight goals in his last three appearances in the German top flight. He continues to be a difference-maker for his side. There’s going to be more goals from Kramaric this season and he is off to the best possible start in his return to action for his club.
Hertha Recover from Shocking DFB-Pokal Defeat
Hertha Berlin were able to get back to winning ways against Werder Bremen. After their shocking 5-4 defeat to Eintracht Braunschweig in the DFB-Pokal, it was looking bleak for their start of the Bundesliga season. They looked a completely different side against Bremen and won convincingly. Four different players scored to contribute to the 4-1 winning effort. New signing Jhon Cordoba was among the goalscorers. The former Köln player appears to be a key contributor for Hertha.
For Bremen, this was not a good start for their campaign. They were almost relegated at the end of the last season but survived in the relegation playoff to stay up. It will be important for Bremen to take away a victory from at least one of their upcoming fixtures. Struggling Schalke and newly promoted side Armenia Bielefeld await them in the next two weeks.
