England Changes Expected for Denmark Nations League Fixture

England face Denmark on Tuesday in their second Nations League 2020 fixture. The Three Lions laboured to a narrow 1-0 over Iceland on Saturday in their opening fixture. Raheem Sterling’s late penalty saved the Three Lions’ blushes after a lacklustre performance where few chances were created by a young England side.

Gareth Southgate could make a number of changes for the second League A2 fixture in Denmark.

The hosts lost their opening fixture 2-0 to Belgium. Kasper Hjulmand’s side played well in parts and they will be determined to put in an improved performance on Tuesday.

England v Denmark Team News

Kyle Walker won’t feature for England following his dismissal against Iceland. The Machester City defender was shown a second yellow card for a rash tackle on Arnor Traustason late in the second half.

Marcus Rashford and Harry Winks withdrew from the England squad due to injury last week and will be unavailable. Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was omitted from the squad due to his ongoing legal issues.

The big news, however, is that both Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden have not travelled with the rest of the squad after reportedly breaking the bubble to meet some girls in Iceland. The duo will, therefore, not be available for the game against Denmark.

Denmark has a fully fit squad with no fresh injuries or suspensions. Inter Milan midfielder Chrisitan Eriksen and RB Leipzig forward Yussuf Poulsen should feature.

Predicted Line-Ups

England could make a number of changes following their slow performance in Rekjavik. Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold should replace the suspended Walker at right-back.

Southgate admitted his side looked short of fitness after Saturday’s opening Nations League match. This could see some rotation with the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Jack Grealish potentially involved.

England (4-3-3): Dean Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Tyrone Mings, Kieran Trippier, Kalvin Phillips, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Jadon Sancho, Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling.

Denmark (4-3-3): Kasper Schmeichel, Daniel Wass, Simon Kjaer, Andreas Christensen, Robert Skov, Christian Eriksen, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Thomas Delaney, Yussuf Poulsen, Kasper Dolberg, Martin Braithwaite.

Form

Despite their disappointing outing against Iceland, the 1-0 victory was England’s fourth consecutive win in competitive matches. They have only lost two of their eight games in the Nations League and finished third in the inaugural completion in 2019.

England’s last lostwas  in the Euro qualifiers in November 2019 when they lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic. Since then, the Three Lions have scored 18 goals and conceded none in their last four.

Denmark’s form is slightly patchy coming into this match. They are without a win in their last two, losing to Belgium on Saturday and drawing 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland last November.

Hjulmand only took over as Denmark boss in July 2020 and the squad will be looking to adapt to his style of play in the coming months.

Prediction

Gareth Southgate always talks about learning and improving with England, particularly with regards to the young players. This should lead to an improved England performance.

But Denmark will give England a tough contest. Hjulmand will be determined to make an impression after a poor start against Belgium.

It will be a tight game with few chances, as both teams will also be short on fitness. But England may just edge the tie with both teams likely to score
