Sheffield United Sign Chelsea’s Ethan Ampadu on Season-Long Loan

Sheffield United have completed the signing of Chelsea centre-back Ethan Ampadu on a season-long loan. The Wales international could be involved when the Blades host Wolves in their opening fixture of the season this weekend.

Ampadu’s parent club Chelsea rate the 19-year-old very highly. The club believe with invaluable Premier League experience at Sheffield United, the defender will be ready for contention next season.

Versatility of Ethan Ampadu Attracts Wilder

Ampadu’s ability to operate as a central defender and a holding midfield player will certainly impress Chris Wilder. The Blades boss operates with three centre-backs. So the acquisition of Ampadu will most likely increase competition in that department.

However, Ampadu played his entire youth career at Exeter City as a midfielder. So is no stranger to the position. When he first joined the Blues, Ampadu continued playing as a central midfielder. His performances in the middle of the park impressed the management team and he really made the position his own.

But in the teenager’s last couple of seasons, he has been deployed as a centre-back more often than not. In the 2019/20 campaign, Ampadu spent a season on loan with RB Leipzig. The Champions league semi-finalists used the Chelsea man as a centre-back. That was of course when he played.

In Need of More Game Time

Ampadu’s time with German club RB Leipzig will be remembered as a frustrating time for him. He managed three appearances for the club, as they enjoyed very successful domestic and European campaigns.

the Welshman himself labelled the move to Leipzig as “not as good as I hoped”. But the defender still outlined that he had learnt a lot from his year in Germany. Next season should see Ampadu be given a lot more game time and build invaluable experience in doing so.

It will be a telling time for Frank Lampard, to see how loanee handles the rigours of the premier league.
