The Relationship Between Danny Rose and Tottenham Hotspur Appears to Be Unsolvable

Danny Rose Tottenham

So far in this short pre-season, Danny Rose is nowhere to be seen in the Tottenham Hotspur line-up. The 30-year-old left-back has not even featured on the bench, with other options being preferred by Jose Mourinho.

With a matter of days until the start of the new season, is Rose in Mourinho’s plans for the forthcoming season? Does he still have a future in North London?

The Relationship Between Danny Rose and Tottenham Remains Unclear

Out of Favour

Currently, it appears that Rose is out of favour at Tottenham. Judging on pre-season fixtures, it appears that he is now the fourth choice left-back. Ben Davies, Ryan Sessegnon and youngster Dennis Cirkin are all ahead of him.

The 30-year-old was once a much-loved figure, especially at the height of the recent success under Mauricio Pochettino. He was the first-choice left-back, and proved hard to displace.

However, his stock has fallen dramatically since then. Issues both on and off the pitch – Rose is open about his struggles with mental health – have hampered his form. As a result, it is now seen him become out of favour under Jose Mourinho.

In the intervening months between the Portuguese’s appointment and Rose leave leaving Tottenham on loan, the left-back featured just five times. While he started three of those games, he never stood out; soon enough, Mourinho established his first-choice left-back, and Rose was allowed to leave.

He performed adequately during his time with Newcastle United. In a side that were defensively astute, the 30-year-old never stood out. During his time in the North East, Rose averaged 1.9 tackles per game, a statistic that actually places him at the top of the Magpies squad in terms of tackling statistics.

While there has always been the debate of whether tackling actually makes you a good defender, those statistics do not compare to his defensive during the peak years of the Pochettino era. The 2016/17, when Tottenham finished second in the Premier League, saw Rose complete almost three tackles per game, in a side that were perhaps at their peak.

As a result, it raises the question of whether he can still compete at the very highest level. If he is now the fourth choice under Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese may believe that he is not capable of doing so.

What Are His Options? Does He Want to Leave?

Rose remains insistent on playing for Tottenham again. Unfortunately for him, that decision could be out of his control.

The 30-year-old is open in his love for the club. However, he is also prone to criticising them in public, too. In 2017, Rose spoke about how he wants the club to sign players that he “doesn’t have to Google”. Furthermore, in the same interview, he stated that he believed he was worthy of a pay rise.

However, speaking to the Second Captains podcast (via FourFourTwo) the 30-year-old wants to continue playing for Spurs.

“I am very happy to stay at Tottenham and see my last 10 or 11 months out, I would love to,” he said. “There is nothing I want more than to play one more time in front of the fans.”

However, his options appear limited at this present time. Rose is nowhere near Jose Mourinho’s plans following a heated exchange that is shown in the recent documentary made about the club. But, his options are limited, as there appears to be no concrete interest.

As a result, Rose’s career has hit a crossroads. He can either see out his contract at Tottenham and not play, or move to a new club that are willing to take him on.
