Newcastle have submitted a bid for Norwich City left-back Jamal Lewis, according to Michael Bailey of the Athletic. The initial fee is expected to be £15 million, with performance-related add-ons set to take the figure to £20 million.
Following the Canaries relegation back to the Championship, a number of players have been linked with moves away. However, a deal for Lewis would signal their first major sale of the transfer window.
The full-back is currently away with Northern Ireland, but would be available for selection for Newcastle’s opening premier league fixture with West Ham United next Saturday. The signing of Lewis would be the first this window, after the collapse of their takeover deal.

Bid Could Spark More Interest in Jamal Lewis
Newcastle United will face competition over the signing of Lewis. The club expect that their initial bid will attract a number of clubs to show their interest.
Lewis also reportedly emerged as a target for Leicester City, after Ben Chilwell departed for Chelsea earlier this window. Although, it has to be said, the arrival of Timothy Castagne should put an end to any speculation of the move.
Premier League Champions Liverpool, were also originally interested in the full-back’s situation before opting to sign Kostas Tsimikas instead. The Reds were looking for a back-up left-back and identified Lewis as the man to get.
Liverpool saw a £10 million bid rejected for Lewis in early August, with the Canaries hoping for to earn £20 million on their academy product, forcing Liverpool to go elsewhere.
Steve Bruce Prioritising Premier League Experience
As a result of the failed Saudi Arabian-backed takeover, Steve Bruce is primarily trying to secure players with premier league experience. The Magpies have been heavily linked with a move for Arsenal’s Rob Holding. But, the 24-year-old is not for sale and Newcastle would only be able to secure a loan deal.
Elsewhere, free agent Ryan Fraser is edging closer to a move to St James’ Park. The former Bournemouth winger has been subject of interest of a whole host of Premier League clubs this summer. However, Newcastle are set to win the race for the Scottish international, who is hoping for a move closer to his Aberdeen-based family.
Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson is another target for the Magpies. Their premier league counterparts Aston Villa, saw a £15 million bid rejected for the English forward. Steve Bruce sees Wilson as one of his primary targets and are trying to structure a deal that would see Matt Ritchie go in the other direction.
