The Premier League is home to some of the best strikers in world football, all of which will be aiming for this season’s golden boot. From veterans Jamie Vardy to up and coming talents Timo Werner, there is a wide array of strikers in the league.
Entering the 2020/21 season, it appears it will be another closely contested race for the golden boot. Vardy won the 2019/20 golden boot by edging out Danny Ings and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang by just one goal.
The upcoming campaign promises yet another exciting race for the top scorer spot. With the possible arrival of Lionel Messi, it could shake up the race even further. However, for now, here are five contenders to win the golden noot this season.
Five Contenders for the Premier League Golden Boot
Timo Werner – Debut Season in the Premier League
Chelsea’s new striker arrives in the Premier League following a successful career playing for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. The 24-year-old scored 28 goals in 34 appearances last season in the German top flight to finish second behind Robert Lewandowski.
Werner has proven to be a consistent goal scorer during his time with Leipzig and he should be able to find similar success at Chelsea. With attacking talent and creativity surrounding Werner this season, he should be provided with the scoring chances he needs to reach more than 20 goals.
Harry Kane – Two Time Golden Boot Winner
After playing just under 30 matches last season, Harry Kane finished tied for sixth place in the Golden Boot race. He played the fewest matches out of the top ten finishers in the golden boot race and would have certainly finished higher had he been able to play in more fixtures.
If he can remain healthy for the duration of the campaign he should be a contender. The last two seasons have not yielded nearly as many goals for the England forward, but Kane can re-emerge this year as the top goal scorer in the Premier League.
Jamie Vardy – Current Golden Boot Holder
Last season’s golden boot winner will be looking to have another fantastic campaign for Leicester City. This was the first time in his career he’s been able to claim the top scorer spot.
Vardy finished with 23 goals in 35 appearances to lead the league during the 2019/20 season. This time around he will most likely have to score more than 23 if he hopes to reclaim the golden boot. If Sergio Aguero and Kane remain fully fit, they could force the other contenders, such as Vardy, to produce big numbers if they hope to claim the prize.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Joint Golden Boot Winner Before
For the second consecutive season, Aubameyang finished with 22 goals. The Arsenal striker was instrumental for his club during their run in the FA Cup and appears to be in good form entering the coming season.
Aubameyang is capable of producing an even better goal total this year with the new signing Arsenal have made. With Willian arriving, Aubameyang should have top quality service to get more goals. This could shape up to be the best season he has in his Premier League career.
Sergio Aguero – Previous Winner
An injury kept Aguero sidelined for the final eight matches of the Premier League season. As a result, he was unable to contest for the golden boot. Having only played in 24 matches, it’s likely he would have been right up there near the top if he had not suffered injuries.
If Aguero is able to remain in good form and health this season, he should be able to contest for the golden boot. This might be one of the final opportunities Aguero could have to claim the top scorer spot. At 32, it remains to be seen how much longer he will be at Manchester City.
Pepe Guardiola’s side have no shortage of attacking talent and Aguero is consistently provided with opportunities to score. Aside from the departure of David Silva, little has changed in Manchester City’s main attacking unit. The reigning league leader in assists Kevin de Bruyne is set to link up again with Aguero for a big season ahead.
