Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White has signed a new contract with the club, running to June 2024. The 22-year-old, who was part of Leeds United’s Championship-winning side, will get his first taste of Premier League action with the Seagulls this coming season.
White joined Brighton in 2014 and quickly progressed through the club’s youth teams. He spent a couple of seasons with the U23’s before making his first-team debut in 2016 in the Carabao Cup.
Ben White Pens Down New Four-Year Deal at Brighton
Ben White has Gradually Progressed up the Ladder
Ahead of the 2017/18 season, White was loaned out to League Two outfit Newport County. He solidified a starting spot within the first couple of games at Rodney Parade and went on to make 42 league appearances.
The young defender then spent the first half of the 2018/19 campaign back with Brighton’s U23 side. By January, White left on loan to league one side Peterborough United. He went on to make 15 appearances for the Posh, as they were narrowly beaten to the play-offs.
Last season, White got his chance at Championship level. This time Leeds United came knocking and it became a memorable season for the young centre-back. He played every single minute of Leeds’ title-winning campaign last season and rightfully swooped the ‘Young Player of the Season Award’.
The news of a contract extension will hurt Leeds fans, who desperately wanted White back on a permanent basis. However, the recent addition of Freiburg defender Robin Koch will certainly excite the Premier League new-boys.
Graham Potter Sings his Praises
Brighton manager Graham Potter has been an admirer of White even before he came to the club.
Speaking to the Brighton website about White’s contract extension, Potter said: “I have been looking forward to working with Ben for a long time.
“He had a brilliant season helping Leeds to the title last season. Now he has the opportunity to show his qualities in the Premier League.
“We are delighted to have agreed a new long-term contract with him. I am sure our supporters will be looking forward to watching him play for the club.”
