United States international Weston McKennie has arrived in Italy to join Juventus according to a report from Fabrizio Romano. The midfielder will undergo a medical on Friday as he prepares to begin his loan spell with the Italian club.
The club’s official Twitter account released footage of McKennie arriving in Turin on Thursday, all but confirming that the loan deal will go through.
Weston McKennie to Join Juventus on Loan
The Terms
According to the report from Romano, the loan deal will be worth €3 million and the buy option would be €18 million. Additionally, there will be an obligation to buy McKennie if he makes appearances in more than 60% of the 2020/2021 season matches.
In other words, if McKennie is utilized consistently by Juventus, then he will be staying at the Serie A club on a permanent basis following the season.
Playing Time Not Guaranteed
McKennie’s playing time at Juventus is not going to be guaranteed. He will be joining one of Europe’s premier clubs with plenty of talent in the midfield. As a result, it is not set in stone he will be featuring in 60% of the matches or more.
It is worth noting that the departure of Blaise Matuidi to Major Leauge Soccer and the possibility of Sami Khedira leaving will open more playing time for others on the squad. Under these circumstances, there is a possibility that if McKennie performs well he will indeed see consistent playing time for Andrea Pirlo’s side.
First Big Test of McKennie’s Career
At 21, McKennie will be embarking on his first opportunity with a top tier club. After a successful beginning to his career at Schalke, the American is now faced with his first big test to show he is one of the top up and coming midfield players in the world.
The expectations at Juventus will be higher and will be nothing like he’s seen yet in his career. If he can perform under pressure and display the growth he’s made as a player over the course of his seasons in the Bundesliga, then he may be the player Juventus need for the future.
