Young Chelsea defender Marc Guehi has re-joined Championship side Swansea City on loan for the 2020/21 season. The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season in South Wales, helping the Swans to reach the play-off semi-finals. He made a total of 14 appearances, the best of which came after lockdown, but will now get the chance to show what he can do across a full season after the Blues were left impressed by his performances for Steve Cooper’s side.
Marc Guehi Signs for Swansea City on Loan
A Key Defender Returns
While Swansea had far from the best defensive record in the Championship last season, the arrival of Guehi in January coincided with a noticeable improvement at the back.
The Swans have already seen Mike van der Hoorn depart the club and Ben Wilmot return to Watford following the end of his loan spell. With the Hornets set to play Swansea in the Championship next season, there is little chance of the former Stevenage defender returning. However, Guehi coming back means Swansea can at least retain one of their key defenders from the run to the play-offs.
One for the Future at Chelsea?
Given how much faith Frank Lampard put into young players last season, Guehi has every reason to believe that a good season with Swansea could see him rewarded with minutes at Chelsea. Fikayo Tomori got exactly that after his 2018/19 season at Derby County and largely impressed during the minutes he got with the Blues.
Chelsea’s defence is set to see the arrival of veteran Thiago Silva on a one-year deal with an option. While Guehi will not get any training time with Silva this season, he could learn a lot next summer providing the Brazilian stays for the second year of his deal.
