Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has revealed to the Guardian that Cristiano Ronaldo recommended Bruno Fernandes‘ signing.

Cristiano Ronaldo Vouches for Bruno Fernandes

Patrice Evra reveals Ole Gunnar Solskjaer texted him about the potential arrival of Bruno Fernandes.

Evra then texted his former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to ask about his fellow countryman.

Cristiano vouched for the Portugal international: Bruno’s a good guy and very professional.

The Frenchman then relayed Ronaldo’s message to United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

I say: Ole, I’ve spoken with Cristiano. Let’s go for it,” Evra added.

Major Impact at Old Trafford

Bruno Fernandes has since had a major impact at Old Trafford, with performances Cristiano Ronaldo will be proud of.

His talent was already there to see in the magnificent numbers he produced at Sporting Lisbon. The forward-thinking midfielder played a part in 15 goals in 17 Liga NOS appearances in 2019/20, before his departure in January.

The likes of Gary Neville correctly urged for caution from United fans following his arrival, allowing him time to settle in. However, he did not need it. He appeared to have settled in almost immediately.

Fernandes had a major impact on the club’s pursuit of Champions League qualification, which was secured on the final day of the season. He was also involved in 15 league goals at United, with the exact same eight goals and seven assists, as at Sporting, and in fewer appearances (14).

Patrice Evra believes Fernandes was absolutely vital in bringing Champions League football back to the Theatre of Dreams.

“Without him, I don’t think we would have qualified for the Champions League,” Evra added.

Where Does He Stand?

Fernandes’ numbers are up there with the best in his position, if not the best. It’s too early to truly judge how he compares to the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and co.

He must deliver for a full season in the Premier League to be compared to a player of that level.

It’s exciting to see how his Europa League form of eight goals and four assists in ten appearances translates into Europe’s number one competition.
