Lazio Sporting Director Criticises David Silva After Manchester City Legend Joins Real Sociedad

Lazio Sporting Director Igli Tare has criticised David Silva after the Spaniard failed to join the Italian giants.

The Manchester City legend, who was close to joining Lazio, has since signed for La Liga club Real Sociedad.

Reversed His Decision

A move to Italy for the 34-year-old was looking likely. There were only a few details left to be agreed before Silva would be announced as a Lazio player.

However, he has now reversed that decision, instead returning to his native Spain to join Sociedad, much to the displeasure of the Lazio Sporting Director.

In a short statement on the club website, Igli Tare said: “I learn about David Silva’s transfer to Real Sociedad. I have great respect for the player, but not for the man.”

It is certainly a scathing assessment of the Manchester City and Premier League legend. Silva would have added a huge amount of firepower to the Lazio midfield, even as he edges closer to retirement.

Lazio finished fourth after a hugely successful campaign. They spent much of the season challenging for the title, only to have a minor collapse post Coronavirus lockdown to finish fourth in Serie A.

Silva Returns to Spain

The midfielder is returning to Spain a decade after leaving the country to join Manchester City.

Sociedad confirmed in their announcement that Silva has agreed a two-year deal with the club.

The La Liga club improved on their ninth-placed finish in the 2018/19 season last year, as they finished the campaign in sixth. As a result, they have qualified for the 2020/21 Europa League.

Silva is likely to replace the attacking threat of Martin Odegaard in the centre of midfield. The Norwegian midfielder has returned to parent club Real Madrid, after a successful season saw him score seven goals and register nine assists in all competitions.
