Newcastle United’s interest from Saudi investors had been ongoing since the start of the year. Nevertheless, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners, and the Reuben Brothers have now withdrawn from the takeover of the club. The injection of money excited fans as they hoped new signings, like Ciro Immobile, could bring the club back to their best.
The clinical attacker revealed in an interview with Corriere Dello Sport that the potential investors called his agent. A plan was set for him to become their frontman, with a new Italian coach coming in alongside him.
Ciro Immobile Pledges Loyalty to Lazio After Newcastle Approach
Ciro Immobile to Newcastle?
A Saudi-based consortium, headed by British businesswoman Amanda Staveley, were attempting to buy the Magpies this summer, but Premier League officials voiced their concerns about the roles of those involved in the takeover.
Italian attacker Ciro Immobile revealed that before the takeover fell through, he was approached by Newcastle’s potential new owners. He mentioned that “during the period in which there was talk of the possible purchase of Newcastle by the Sheikh’s fund they called my agent, Alessandro Moggi.”
The 30-year-old also believes they were looking for a new manager. “they were also looking for an Italian coach, [Massimiliano] Allegri or [Luciano] Spalletti.” Their current coach, Steve Bruce, took the club to a respectable 13th place in his first season with his boyhood club. His first season could have been his last, however, if the sale of the club went through.
The Golden Shoe
At 30-years-old, Ciro Immobile is in the form of his life. The Italian fended off the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as he won the European Golden Shoe. The award is given to the top scorer in Europe’s top domestic leagues.
Immobile scored an impressive 36 goals in his 37 appearances in Serie A this season. He also contributed with 8 assists in the league. The Italian has scored over 20 league goals in three of his four seasons at Lazio. There is no signs of stopping him, either, despite his age.
Most clubs in world football could benefit from the signing of Ciro Immobile. His job is to score goals, and he does it incredibly well. Nevertheless, the attacker has pledged his future to Lazio and the potential addition of David Silva will also surely contribute to even more goals next year as he looks to retain his Golden Boot.
