Several Clubs Interested
A host of clubs seem to be chasing his signature, but it now looks like he will be heading to St. James’ Park. There was interest from many Premier League clubs and across Europe, with Roma and AC Milan reportedly interested too. However, Newcastle seems to be his preferred destination.
Takeover Failure Means Shrewd Business is Required From the Magpies
It seems with the takeover having fallen through, Steve Bruce will remain as the Magpies’ Head Coach for the 2020/21 season. Newcastle, however, will have a restricted transfer budget. This is something the Magpies have had to become accustomed too as a result of their current ownership. As a result, smart business will be required as Steve Bruce puts plans into place for the upcoming season.
This is not the big-money signing many Newcastle fans were hoping for with all the talk of a takeover. However, it’s a signing few should be turning their noses up at.
The 28-year-old was a regular for the Clarets this season. He made 24 league appearances and was seen as extremely important to Sean Dyche. The Burnley boss was understandably frustrated at the club’s dealings with Hendrick and several other squad members who now see themselves out of contract and heading for the exit door at Turf Moor.
From midfield, the Republic of Ireland international contributed two goals and two assists in the league last season. Hendrick was once Burnley’s club-record signing following a £10 million move from Derby in 2016.
If this deal goes through as expected, Steve Bruce will have gotten his hands on a player with bags of Premier League experience. He is someone still in his prime years. The fact that there was concrete interest from around Europe, including some of Europe’s biggest names, tells you all you need to know about the quality he has.
He has made over 100 Premier League appearances. While he may not be the most exciting signing this window will bring, this will be a great bit of business for Newcastle.
