Former Middlesbrough man Daniel Ayala could be about to seal a move to Swansea City, according to Wales Online.
Swansea Look at Free Agent Daniel Ayala
Ayala Played Nearly 200 Games for Middlesbrough
The defender has been with Boro since 2013 and has featured in nearly 200 games for the club during his seven-year spell with them.
However, upon the conclusion of the 2019/20 campaign, boss Neil Warnock has decided to let him leave on a free transfer. Now, he could be set to make a switch to Championship rivals Swansea.
Swansea Missed Out in the Play-Offs
The Swans are on the lookout for players to help them go one better in the league next season. Having finished sixth in the league, they ultimately lost to Brentford in the play-off semi-final and are now looking to regroup and try for automatic promotion when they next have a crack at it.
With Mike van der Hoorn on his way out of the Liberty Stadium and with the club eager to add some strong and experienced figures to their squad over the summer, they believe Ayala could be the ideal replacement. In addition to that, Joe Rodon is turning heads across the country and if he leaves, then it’ll leave Steve Cooper in desperate need of defenders.
Leganes Also Keen on Ayala
They won’t be alone in trying to sign the Spaniard though, with the prospect of a return to his home country coming in the form of Leganes. The La Liga side are believed to be eager to bring the centre-back to the club and will put up a transfer fight to secure his signature.
However, whether Leganes will be able to wrap up a deal for the 29-year old is another matter. The player’s wages could be an issue and if it becomes too much of a financial strain on the Spanish club, then they might not be able to pursue a deal.
Swansea then could be in pole position to ensure that Ayala again plays Championship football next season.
