Oldham Athletic have appointed Harry Kewell as their new manager, with the former Liverpool midfielder agreeing a one-year deal.
His appointing follows the sacking of Dino Maamria on July 31.

Speaking to the Oldham Atheltic website, Kewell said: “I’m excited about the project and don’t get me wrong it’s going to take time. Because the one thing I think this club does need is stability and if we can get that, then we can start to grow things.
“We’ve got to get back to the basics and we’re having a ‘clean slate’ here now and I think the fans, myself, the owner, everybody wants to start seeing this club progress because we all believe that’s there’s a big potential.”
Challenging Task Ahead
Taking over at Boundary Park will certainly be a challenging task for the 41-year-old.
The Latics’ recent history has seen them appoint 11 different managers since 2015. Two of those managers – John Sheridan and Pete Wild – have had two individual spells in that time.
None of those managers have held down the role for a long period of time. Richie Wellens, who recently won promotion from League Two with Swindon Town, held the job the longest out of those 11 managers. However, he was only in charge for 40 games.
As a result, Kewell has a tough job on his hands, as he takes on the tough task of impressing chairman Abdallah Lemsagam.
Oldham finished 19th in the 2019/20 League Two season. However, they won just won nine of their 37 games before the season was curtailed in March.
However, Kewell knows and understands the job that he has on his hands. It will take time to rebuild the club, as they look to make a return to League One after two seasons away.
The Australian does not boast an appeasing record as a manager. He has been out of work for almost two years, after being sacked by Notts County in November 2018. Kewell won just three of his 14 games in charge.
