Plenty of Experience
Despite only being 25, Nicholson has 197 career appearances under his belt. The majority of those came for Hearts in the SPFL, where he came through the youth academy and spent four years as a senior player.
In 2017, he made the move across the Atlantic to sign for Minnesota United. He played 20 times for the St Paul-based side, scoring twice.
He left Minnesota a year later but remained in the USA after he was traded to Colorado Rapids. In return, Minnesota received Eric Miller $50,000 in General Allocation Money.
His spell with Colorado was marginally more successful. He made 50 appearances for the club, scoring four times.
Following the expiration of his contract with Colorado, Nicholson looked to return closer to home and has signed a deal with Rovers which is subject to international clearance.
What Was Said?
Speaking to the club website, Nicholson said of the move: “Joining Rovers is something that I’ve been looking forward to since arriving back in the UK.
“I’ve had chats with the manager and I know the direction of the club moving forward. For any player, that’s very exciting and once I heard what he had to say, my mind was made up.
“Playing in England is something that I’ve always wanted to do and now I’m looking forward to settling in with the players in the squad and getting used to the league.”
Manager Ben Garner added: “We are delighted to sign Sam and are very pleased that we have managed to secure his services for the season ahead.”
