Layton Stewart Signs New Liverpool Contract

Ten Years a Red

The 17-year-old forward, who has been with the Reds since the age of seven, finished his debut season with the U18s with an impressive 16 goals. It’s even more impressive given his campaign was ended more prematurely than most due to an ankle injury.

His final appearance of the fragmented season came January, Stewart signed off in style with a hat-trick against Sunderland.

Highly thought of by coaches and staff at the club, Stewart is blessed with a natural fitness and the ability to finish his chances.

After scoring seven goals in 13 appearances for the U18 team, his first taste of first-team action quickly followed as part of the squad sent to Villa Park for the Carabao Cup quarter-final in December. With the majority of the senior squad in Qatar for the FIFA Club World Cup, Stewart was an unused substitute in the 5-0 defeat.

Despite only being 17, the young forward has made numerous appearances for the Liverpool U23 side, including Leasing.com Trophy fixtures against Football League opposition in Fleetwood Town and Accrington Stanley.

First-team chances at the current English, European, and world champions are likely to be few and far between in the near future for Stewart. He and the club may look to utilise the loan system to further his development, something Rhian Brewster has relished this year whilst at Swansea City.

Should Stewart continue to develop he certainly seems to have a bright future with the club, he doesn’t have to look far for an example of someone coming through the system to make a huge impact on the senior side. Fellow Scouser Trent Alexander-Arnold came through the Melwood Academy and is now one of the best in the world in his position.
