REPORT: Jensen Weir Set to Sign for Brighton & Hove Albion From Wigan Athletic

Jensen Weir

Wigan Athletic youngster Jensen Weir is set to complete a move to Brighton & Hove Albion, according to Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports and Wigan Today’s Paul Kendrick. The Latics need to raise money to pay wages after being put into administration by their owners last week. It is expected that Weir will cost Brighton around £600,000.

The Move

Weir is the son of former Everton defender and Scotland international David Weir. The 18-year-old midfielder will initially link up with Brighton’s U23 squad as they stick to their policy of signing young talents.

Although ideally Wigan would like to keep one of their big talents, they are not in a position to be able to do this due to finding themselves in administration. Kendrick’s report for Wigan Today suggests that the money the Latics will receive for Weir will cover player and staff wages until the end of the season.

Administrators at the club are continuing the search for a potential buyer to take over from Next Leader Fund L.P. but this move gives Wigan some breathing space.

What Can Weir Bring to Brighton?

At 18, Weir is still in the infancy of his career, but he was seen as one of the bright young talents in Wigan’s ranks.

The Warrington-born midfielder became the club’s youngest player two seasons ago when he turned out against Accrington Stanley aged 15 years and 280 days in a Checkatrade Trophy tie.

He made his league debut against Birmingham City towards the end of the 2018/19 season, while his only appearance for the first team this campaign came in an EFL Cup match against Stoke City at the start of the season.

Weir has also captained Scotland at U16 and U17 level, but has since switched allegiances to England, where he has featured at U17 and U18 level.
