What Was Said?

Speaking to the club website, the Republic of Ireland age-group player said: “I’m obviously delighted and I’m happy to be here.

“I am looking forward to next season. There has been a bit of a break now and I had quite a big injury layoff, so I am really happy to get the new deal sorted and hopefully I can get some game time next season.

“Last season it was a new squad, so everyone was getting to know each other and each others’ game but this season we have [kept] a nucleus of players.

“We should now know how each other plays because we have had near enough a full season together, so I am hoping that it is going to be a good season.”

Walsall manager Darrell Clarke was full of praise for the young defender, challenging him to establish himself as a first team regular next campaign.

“Callum has all the attributes to be a top defender,” said Clarke.

“This is the season he really needs to establish himself as a first team regular with that undoubted ability he has.”

Injury Woes

An academy product, Cockerill-Mollett made his first team debut in the EFL Trophy in 2016 before breaking into the first team this season.

An injury picked up against Salford on January 4th limited the youngster to just  nine league appearances. However, he remains optimistic about the future.

“When you take that opportunity to become a first team regular because I managed to get quite a few games on the bounce and then I got injured, it came at a bad time,” he said. “I felt like I was just about to hit a good bit of form.

“The timing wasn’t great, but these things happen in football and you’ve just got to get on with it and work hard behind the scenes.”

Clarke echoed his positivity, stating: “He was a little unfortunate last season when playing well to pick up the injury when he did, and I know he is raring to kick on again in the new campaign.”
