Keith Curle: Northampton Town Manager Signs New Deal With Club

Northampton Town manager Keith Curle has signed a new two-year deal with the club. This comes after Curle guided the Cobblers to League One through the play-offs, beating Exeter City 4-0 in the final.

Steady Progress

Curle took over at Sixfields in October 2018 after a disastrous start to the campaign under Dean Austin. The Cobblers sat rock bottom of League Two but underwent gradual progress under Curle, who eventually guided them to a 15th-place finish – 20 points adrift of the relegation spots.

The former Carlisle United boss then took it up a notch this season and Northampton were always in the mix for a play-off spot. They got in just before the season was brought to a premature ending, and produced one of the greatest play-off comebacks ever seen.

After losing the home leg of their semi-final against Cheltenham Town 2-0, they knew they had to go to the team with the best defence in the entire Football League and score three times without reply. Somehow, they did just that as Vadaine Oliver’s header and a brace from Callum Morton sent them through.

They faced Exeter at an empty Wembley Stadium last week and the Grecians’ rotten luck in play-off finals continued. They were played off the park by Curle’s Northampton, who sealed a 4-0 win and a return to League One after three seasons away.

What Was Said?

Speaking to the club website about the contract, chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “Keith has made a huge impact and he fully deserves his new contract.

“In a short space of time he has instilled a real professionalism, a drive and a unity in the playing squad that supporters can really relate to and he has given the club a playing identity.

“The first team squad have moved forward in leaps and bounds both individually and collectively under Keith, while we should also not overlook the way Keith and his staff have really brought in to the spirit of the club and the way they have and continue to help the supporters and the wider community.”
