McCarthy Interested in Management Return

The Robins are looking for a new boss after Lee Johnson was sacked after his side’s 1-0 defeat to rivals Cardiff City.

According to reports in the Sun on Sunday, the Irishman has ‘thrown his hat into the ring’ after the role became available yesterday evening.

The 61-year-old has been out of work since leaving his managerial role with the Republic of Ireland in April.

McCarthy has a wealth of experience at the Championship level.

He has previously managed a host of Championship clubs as well as taking charge of his home country during two separate spells.

He left his last role in club management, at Ipswich Town, in 2018, where they pushed for the playoffs on multiple occasions during his six-year tenure.

However, his most successful managerial stints came prior to that with Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

McCarthy secured promotion to the Premier League with both clubs and this winning mentality may prove attractive for the Robins.

After leaving the national setup in the spring, McCarthy is available to clubs without the need for any compensation fees.

Given the impact of the coronavirus on football clubs’ finances, this may be an inviting prospect.

Bristol City’s Play-Off Woes

The Robins parted ways with Johnson after losing all four games since the Championship restarted last month.

That poor form saw Bristol City drop from seventh to twelfth during this time.

Yesterday’s result sees them now nine points behind sixth-placed Cardiff City with their play-off fading away.

Johnson was at the helm of the South West side since 2016 and made steady progress during those four-and-a-half years.

He took them from fighting relegation to challenging for the play-offs but could never break into the top six.
