Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has cast doubt over the future of Matteo Guendouzi at Arsenal, after the midfielder has struggled following the return of the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta Casts Doubt Over the Future of Matteo Guendouzi
‘Whatever Internal Issues We Have, We Will Deal With Them Privately’
The 21-year-old’s future at the club has come into question since the Premier League’s long-awaited restart.
He was ineffective during their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, before an altercation with Brighton & Hove Albion’s Neal Maupay in the following game only saw him narrowly avoid an FA charge.
As a result of the intense scrutiny, he was not part of the 20-man squad that defeated Southampton 2-0.
The incident with Maupay is what saw him dropped from Arteta’s squad. It also raised the question of whether he will remain with the Gunners.
Speaking ahead of FA Cup fixture with Sheffield United this weekend, the Arsenal boss said to The Guardian: “Whatever internal issues we have, we will deal with them privately and I am never going to make any of that public.
“All the players that are here, I am counting on them,” he said, following questions about the Frenchman’s future.
“If they want to jump on the boat they are more than welcome and that’s always my mindset. I am here to help all of them to improve individually and collectively. That is my job.”
Does Matteo Guendouzi Have a Future at Arsenal?
The Frenchman is still only young and playing as a defensive midfielder, he will always face intense scrutiny if he fails to live up to expectations.
Despite Arsenal’s poor season, he has failed to stand out in games this season. While he yields an impressive pass completion rate of 88.4% in the Premier League, he has just one assist to his name. Arguably, this could be down to the confidence of the Arsenal front three, who have scored just 43 goals this season.
However, as previously mentioned, Mikel Arteta has a long journey ahead as he looks to rebuild the entire club. If a player does not want to be apart of that, then the Spaniard will move them on.
As a result, it remains to be seen whether Guendouzin has a future with Arsenal. If he is keen to leave, then according to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are one of several clubs showing interest.
