Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have done it. After 30 years of hurt, the Reds have finally won their first Premier League title.
The majority of the credit has to go to their charismatic manager. The German came to the club in 2015 and transformed a mid-table team to one of the most feared outfits in Europe.
The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the coronation, but it was finally confirmed yesterday when Chelsea defeated rivals Manchester City.
After the game, the German spoke to Sky Sports News (via Daily Mirror).
Jurgen Klopp Reacts to Liverpool Winning the League
Klopp’s Sky Sports Appearance
A tearful Klopp started his Sky Sports appearance by seemingly being awed by his team’s achievement.
“It is unbelievable. It’s much more than I ever thought would be possible. For our fans: It’s for you. It is incredible. It is a joy to do it for you.
“It’s an incredible achievement by my players, and it’s a huge joy for me to coach them,” said the German.
“I haven’t waited 30 years, I have been here for four-and-a-half years, but it is quite an incredible achievement, especially with the three-month break because nobody knew if we could go on.”
The German also reflected on his team’s achievement. His Liverpool side has written its own incredible chapter in Anfield’s folklore.
“It is a mix of the history you created we are compared with. We had to write our own story,” he said.
“The atmosphere around the club, everyone lives football. We have a wonderful mix of players, all winners. It is so incredibly difficult in this competition, but consistency drives us.”
But before the interview could go on, Klopp cut it short. Quite simply, his emotions were not allowing him to go on.
Jurgen Klopp Relives the Moment It Was Confirmed
After a night to reflect, Klopp shared more of his thoughts with the media in his typical eloquent style.
“I am really happy, relieved. Last night I was overwhelmed. It was an incredible ride to get here,” he started by saying during his press conference.
He also spoke of what he did just before the final whistle blew.
“I called my family 10 seconds before the final whistle. I told them I loved them; they told me they loved me. I left the phone on the table so they could hear what followed.”
In addition, he defended his team’s choice to watch the game together. Videos have since emerged of the Liverpool players partying as they were confirmed champions.
Looking to the Future
Klopp also reaffirmed his commitment to the city of Liverpool. Words that will make every Reds fan happy.
“I feel very close to this city. From the first day, it clicked with the people. I love the way they see life, the way they are different, I love the Scouse soul,” said Klopp. “If I didn’t like the people I wouldn’t stay here for nine years.”
“I know it [Premier League title] means the world to the people, it means the world to me. It’s massive.”
