REPORT: Derby County Join Chase For Craig Gordon

Derby County are the latest club to be linked with out-of-contract Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon. The Scotland international, who has been out of favour at Parkhead, is keen for first-team football, having featured just six times for the champions since December 2018.

The Rams are said to be in the market for a keeper ahead of next season and join Hearts in the chase for the Scotsman.

”Enormous Gap” Between Gordon and Celtic

This week, the 37-year-old claimed that there was an “enormous gap” between the two parties demands, according to reports north of the border.

Gordon was initially dropped by Brendan Rodgers during the latter stages of his reign before Neil Lennon took over and favoured loanee Fraser Forster.

Despite Gordon claiming that the door remains open to an agreement, it looks doubtful that the two parties will be able to arrange a deal.

Derby Short in Goalkeeper Department

Ben Hamer, who is on a season-long loan from Huddersfield Town, has been the Rams’ number one keeper this season.

It remains unknown whether Phillip Cocu wants to bring Hamer back to Pride Park on a permanent basis; however, Manchester City appear keen for reserve keeper Scott Carson to return for another year.

Dutchman Kelle Roos is Derby’s other first-team keeper. Roos has endured mixed success for the Rams in the last two seasons; so it comes as no surprise for the Rams to be looking elsewhere.

If this is the case, Gordon provides a shrewd option for the East Midlands club given his contract situation. However, his age may cast doubt over the likelihood of any move.

Hearts of Midlothian remain favourites to bring Gordon back to where his career began.
