Luke Varney is among five players to be released by Cheltenham Town. The veteran forward joined the Robins in 2018 and scored seven goals this season as they reached the play-off semi-finals, where they were beaten by Northampton Town.

Others Released

As well as former Blackpool and Leeds United striker Varney, four others will be leaving the Jonny-Rocks stadium and the end of their deals.

Rohan Ince, formerly of Brighton & Hove Albion, will be seeking a new club after not seeing his deal renewed. The 27-year-old joined in 2019 having previously had loan spells at Fulham, Swindon Town and Bury.

Goalkeeper Rhys Lovett also leaves having rarely played since moving from Rochdale. He mostly saw action in non-league after loan spells as Tiverton Town, Shepton Mallett and Shortwood United.

Youngster Archie Brennan is in a similar boat to Lovett, having not featured for the first team. He had loans at Lydney Town, Slimbridge and Alvechurch.

Finally, forward Jonte Smith leaves having scored one goal in 12 appearances since his move from Oxford United last summer.

Duff On ‘Horrible’ Decisions

Speaking to the club website about the decisions made, Cheltenham manager Michael Duff said: “This is the horrible part of the game. Particularly after last night, you’re having to have conversations 12 hours after the disappointment of last night. It’s the ruthless and horrible side.

“Obviously there are financial constraints as well which sometimes comes into the equation, particularly with the unknown future in terms of crowds and you’ve got to factor that in as well. It’s sometimes a case of not what you want to do, it’s what you have to do.

“We wish everybody all the best. One thing they’ve all been is very good people, which is the most important thing.”
