Twenty-year-old Southend United midfielder Lewis Gard has penned a new one-year deal with the club, with the option of a second year. Gard has been with the Blues since the age of eight and made his debut against Oldham Athletic in April 2018.
Lewis Gard Signs New One-Year Deal at Southend United
Sticking With the Club
Gard’s new deal means that he will be sticking with the club despite their relegation from League One this season. The Essex club were unable to avoid the drop and go down a division alongside Bolton Wanderers and Tranmere Rovers.
After Gard’s debut against Oldham, he came off the bench in the following game against Bradford City and featured in two EFL Trophy fixtures that season.
A nasty injury saw the youngster spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines with twin medial ligament damage which he suffered against Colchester United. However, he returned in style in February when he scored against Oxford United and he also went on to feature against Bristol Rovers before the season was brought to an early conclusion.
What Was Said?
Speaking to the Southend Echo, Gard said:
“I’m really happy to have got the deal done. It’s been going on for a couple of weeks now and I’m really happy it’s all been sorted so I can play for another year. I can’t wait to get going again.
“It was really annoying everything had to stop after I’d had those two games. I felt like I was playing well when it got cut short but I’m happy I at least got those games because without them it could’ve been a completely different story for me now.
“We got the win in what turned out to be the last game and I was happy to get a goal against Oxford too. That gave me a lot of confidence and hopefully I’ll still be confident when we get back to it.”
