As Liverpool stand on the cusp of securing their first league title in 30 years, there can be little doubt that one man will be at the centre of the praise. Jurgen Klopp has transformed the side into a European powerhouse since taking over from Brendan Rodgers in 2015 and the one accolade that has eluded them for so long will soon be in their grasp.
Trent Alexander-Arnold Lauds Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool Close in on Title
Celebrations on Ice
The Reds cannot technically win the title tonight when they make the short hop over to Everton, but such is the magnitude of their lead over the rest of the chasing pack that a first-ever title in the Premier League era has never been in doubt for most of the season.
Klopp’s side need just six more points to be confirmed champions and to wrestle the title off Manchester City, who pipped Liverpool to top spot last season by just one point. Wins tonight against their Merseyside rivals and then at home to Crystal Palace in the week will be enough. This would see them travel to the Etihad next week as champions.
Youngster’s Praise for Jurgen Klopp
The bedding of Trent Alexander-Arnold into the first-team at Liverpool has come during Klopp’s reign at the club. After a handful of appearances in the 2016/17 season, the then-teenager pounced on the misfortune of Nathaniel Clyne to take the starting right-back berth for himself, and Clyne has barely had a look-in since.
The defender has been part of Liverpool’s rise scraping into the Champions League places to hunting down the top spot two years in a row, all under the watchful eye of the German, and he knows just how special it will be when they do finally get their hands on the trophy.
Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, Trent Alexander-Arnold said: “To change the whole club, to change everyone from doubters to believers, to get everybody thinking the same way, believing the same way and having the same dreams…
“He just embodies the whole club. Even without being from the city, the country and being local, he just clicks with the club. He does it with every person – the fans, the staff and the players.”
Is This Just the Start?
It’s easy to think that Liverpool has always been reeling in the silverware under Jurgen Klopp given how well they have done recently. However, all three of their trophies under him came just last year. The Champions League win in 2018/19 opened the door for them to edge past Chelsea in the Super Cup, and that led to an appearance at the Club World Cup in Qatar, where victory over Flamengo in the final secured a third trophy in six months.
To think that only now is all of Klopp’s work reeling the benefits must be worrying for other teams. They have been linked to the world’s best talents alongside the rest of Europe’s elite and though they may not need them yet given this squad still has time to work together, continued success will keep those moves a possibility when the time comes.
Premier League success will not be confirmed tonight, but a win against their local rivals will set up the perfect opportunity to win it at Anfield in the week. The elusive accolade will finally be theirs and the journey from doubters to believers will finally be complete.
