Chelsea have confirmed that they have completed the signing of German striker Timo Werner.
Timo Werner Joins Chelsea
Statement of Intent
Chelsea’s capture of the German international is a major statement of intent from Frank Lampard.
Werner – who is one of the most coveted strikers in world football – was looking likely to join Liverpool this summer. However, when the Reds decided not to pay the asking price for the 24-year-old, Chelsea acted quickly.
It is not only a statement of intent from Chelsea, but also the striker himself. His ideal move was to the current Premier League leaders; however, he was not prepared to wait another year for that to happen.
As a result, he has opted for a move to Stamford Bridge, where Lampard is building a team where his closest rivals are likely to be looking on with envy. Adding a striker who currently has 31 goals to his name is likely to be the cherry on top of the cake, but there could still be more signings to come at Stamford Bridge this summer.
Where Will Timo Werner Fit In at Chelsea?
The 24-year-old is likely to bring two things to Frank Lampard’s team: competition for places and adaptability.
Tammy Abraham has had an excellent first full season at Chelsea. However, he struggled following the turn of the year, scoring just once since before Coronavirus halted the football season.
As a result, the addition of a world-class striker will push Abraham to ensure that he maintains his place in the starting line-up.
However, Lampard is likely to try and fit both Werner and Abraham into the starting 11. The German can also play on the right-hand side of a front three, which is the Chelsea boss’ preferred formation.
Ideally, though, the duo will be able to play together in a two to get the best out of the former RB Leipzig striker. This, however, will mean a reshuffle in midfield.
