Another pulsating round of Bundesliga matches have come to an end, with plenty of talking points and exciting action. Meanwhile, struggling Mainz boosted their survival hopes with a crucial win at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Elsewhere, there were vital wins for Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Wolfsburg.

Nils Petersen Dents Borussia Monchengladbach’s Champions League Hopes

Petersen Secures the First Win in Five for SC Freiburg

Nils Petersen’s tenth goal of the season secured a much-needed win for Freiburg as they keep their Europa League hopes alive. However, it was a huge dent in Borussia Monchengladbach’s hopes of securing Champions League football.

Gladbach dominated the first half creating several good opportunities to take the lead but found the Freiburg defence and goalkeeper Alex Schwolow in top form.

Set pieces proved to be the dent in Gladbach’s armour as Freiburg struck a crucial blow early in the second half. Petersen leapt above everyone else to head the home side in front latching onto Vincenzo Grifo’s excellent cross. Gladbach’s hopes of a comeback faded further when Alassane Plea was sent off for two yellow cards.

The result sees Freiburg maintain eighth place but close the gap on the Europa League places to just two points. Gladbach stay fourth despite their defeat but maintain their place on goal difference.

As Nils Petersen Takes His Tally to Ten Goals, Mainz Pick up Vital Away Win at Eintracht Frankfurt

Mainz boosted their chances of survival after collecting an excellent away win at inconsistent Eintracht Frankfurt. Goals from Moussa Niakhate and Pierre Malong ensured Mainz collected a first win in six games.

A disappointing afternoon for Eintracht Frankfurt whose two-match winning run comes to an end. Adi Hutter left frustrated with missed opportunities and lack of defensive concentration.

The visitors struck the opening goal on the cusp of half time thanks to Niakhate. The big centre half met Daniel Brosinki’s corner and powered a header past Kevin Trapp. Pierre Malong secured Mainz’s win tucking a shot into the bottom corner after latching onto Karim Onisiwo’s pass.

The result sees Mainz remain 15th but significantly, pull three points clear of the relegation zone. Eintracht Frankfurt remain stuck in the bottom half with a semi-final cup tie against Bayern Munich on the horizon.
