FA Cup

The FA Cup quarter-finals are expected to take place on the weekend of the 27th and 28th June, with the final scheduled for August 1.

The quarter-finals were expected to take place on the weekend of March 21. But, the season had already been suspended due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

FA Cup Set to Return

English Football Edging Back

But it was announced yesterday that the Premier League would return on June 17th, with the league hoping to play out the remaining 92 League Games.

Following this announcement by the league, The FA have followed suit and are hoping to play out the remainder of the competition.

There have been no confirmations of kick-off times, or where the games will be played yet, which could leave a question on whether the FA Cup semi-finals will be played at Wembley or another ground.

Despite this, the Football Association’s chief executive, Mark Billingham, is pleased that there is a scheduled restart for the Cup. However, he also expressed the potential health risk: “The competition has been an integral part of English football for 150 years.”

“While it is a positive step, the health and wellbeing of players, staff and supporters remain our priority.”

Opportunities for FA Cup Glory Still On

The news that the world’s oldest cup competition has returned will, no doubt, please many supporters.

The ties for the sixth round included a top-four clash between Leicester City and Chelsea. The Blues defeated Leicester 2-1 at the King Power at this stage in 2018. They went on to win the competition that year.

Basement side Norwich City defeated Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in round five. They will take on Manchester United, who defeated Derby County.

Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United, have exceeded expectations this season. Currently in the hunt for a European Place, they take on Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who have won the competition three times in the last six seasons, and a record thirteen times.

This means holders Manchester City have been drawn against Newcastle United, who would be looking for their first semi-final appearance in 15 years.
