There will still be promotion and relegation among the EFL’s three leagues, even if the season is curtailed. This is according to the latest EFL statement.
There are also plans for the play-offs to still be held, however, only four teams will compete in them.
Promotion and Relegation to Remain in EFL
51% of the 71 clubs that compete in the English Football League will only need to agree for the season to draw to a close.
As previously discussed, the leagues would be decided by the points-per-game system.
The Championship have already insisted on finishing out the season, with training expected to return on Monday.
League Two Already on Board
Clubs in the fourth tier of English Football voted to bring the season to a premature close.
This would be positive news for the likes of Swindon Town, Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle. They would all earn promotion to League One.
Unfortunately, it would mean that Stevenage Town would be relegated to the National League.
But it could also mean we see two sides promoted from Non-League, depending on how they vote in their retrospective league.
Will League One’s Promotion Chasers Be on Board?
League One has been in the headlines other the last week over how they believe the season should end.
Promotion contenders Peterborough United, Oxford United, Portsmouth and Sunderland have all insisted they want to play out the rest of the season.
But following Bury’s dismissal from the EFL, there are 23 clubs in the division. Meaning there will be a guaranteed majority on any decision.
If the League One season is curtailed, the proposed PPG comes into play. It would mean Wycombe Wanderers who are currently eighth, would leapfrog Peterborough into the play-offs.
It would also mean that Tranmere, Southend and Bolton would be relegated to League Two. Though Southend and Bolton were looking certain for the drop, Tranmere were only three points off Wimbledon, with a game in hand.
But it would mean that Coventry City and Rotherham United would automatically go up to the Championship.
