It’s been two months since the suspension of the Premier League and a return to football still seems nowhere closer, according to ESPN. Monday’s summit meeting was yet another conference to occur without a date set for the season to be resumed. Not only that, but we still don’t know how or if the season will be resumed, and if the season can’t be resumed, we don’t know the plan.
European Football Nearing a Return, but the Premier League still Uncertain
The Premier League Nearing an Impossible Deadline
UEFA has set a May 25 deadline for all European leagues to confirm either their restart plans or intention to cancel the season
The May 25th deadline to decide their restart plans, or intention to cancel the season is creeping ever closer. The Premier League has less than two weeks to somehow decide, while it seems they have made little to no progress in two whole months.
Football Returning Across Europe
Other leagues have dealt with this situation much better. The Bundesliga is set to return this week, La Liga is aiming for a June 12 restart, and the Serie A has agreed on a June 13 restart. Even England’s lower leagues have done better than the Premier League. The Championship could be nearing a return and Leagues one and two have already accepted that the season is over.
According to a report by Mark Ogden of ESPN, the EFL Championship could be nearing a return as early as June 6th.
While the Premier League still struggles to progress talks between its twenty clubs and the government, the EFL are confident that the Championship will return very soon. As early as the first week of June!
Sources have suggested that League 1 and League 2 are likely to cancel the season, and just try to finish the promotion and relegation playoffs. However, there is still hope that the Championship can return.
ESPN reports that Championship clubs are now just waiting to be advised on safety protocols before they can launch preparations for the league’s return to action.
Football is back, but not in England’s top flight. With many leagues nearing a restart, football fans will be happy that they can finally watch live matches, but the arguably best league in the world is still shrouded in uncertainty.
