The Premier League’s ‘Project Restart’ has taken another hit with the news that a third player from Brighton & Hove Albion has tested positive for Coronavirus. The club have not confirmed who the player is but say that he is now in a 14-day period of self-isolation.
Brighton & Hove Albion Have Third Player Test Positive for Coronavirus
Players Can Continue to Train
The club’s players have been allowed to train individually at their facility in Lancing and despite this news of the third confirmed case, this will be allowed to continue.
Brighton chief executive Paul Barber told Sky Sports: “Unfortunately we’ve had a third player test positive yesterday (Saturday, May 9), so despite all of the measures that we’ve been taking over the past few weeks, where the players haven’t been involved in any significant training at all, we’ve still suffered another player testing positive for the virus.
“So there are concerns and I think it’s normal for all clubs to have those concerns. We want to make sure we do everything that we can to ensure those protocols are in place and are safe and secure and mitigate the risk as far as we can.”
Project Restart
The Premier League’s plans to get the season underway again are likely to be hit by this news. Officials at clubs towards the lower end of the league have been the most vocal in their dissatisfaction at getting the campaign going again.
Barber feels that the season should be played to a finish, but only when it is completely safe to do so.
He said: “First we need to get players back training in small groups, then they need to get involved in some contact training and then training for a match before the match itself.
“So there are lots of stages, it’s very complex and there are people at the Premier League working very hard to produce detailed paperwork to move through those stages as safely as possible.”
