Manchester United have struggled to build a successful attack since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, but it seems that with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the wheel, that dream may become a reality. There are rumours of incredible signings, and with talented individuals already at the club, the Manchester United attack could be magnificent next season, and for many years ahead of that.
What Could the Manchester United Attack Look Like Next Season
This Season
This campaign, United’s attack has seen much variety. Ideally, Marcus Rashford would play on the left, Anthony Martial in the centre, and Daniel James on the right, but injuries have run rampant in the squad, and this lineup has been greatly affected.
At the beginning of the season, Martial was on the sidelines for a month, in which time Rashford saw himself slump greatly. They seemingly play best together, but the Frenchman has shone since his English counterpart’s injury in January.
James, while being good and going over and above any expectations of him from before his debut, has not been world-class, and seemed over-played and tired for much of the season.
The likes of Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira have also tried their hand on the right and as a centre-forward behind Martial, but both have had catastrophic campaigns, and the Red Devils may look to offload them in the summer.
Mason Greenwood has been one of the biggest success stories of 2019/20 for Manchester United, but at the age of 18-years-old, it is difficult to see him starting week in week out.
On loan from China, Odion Ighalo also became a regular in cup competitions before the suspension of football, but it remains to be seen whether United will make his stay in Manchester permanent.
While the Red Devils’ attack has shown moments of brilliance this campaign, there are certainly improvements that need to be made in order for them to start challenging for the Premier League title.
What it Could Look Like Next Season With New Signings
Despite the undoubted quality of United’s current frontline, certain additions may add to the quality.
Rumours of a transfer for Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane were recently quashed, but there are many others with whom United are being linked. The likes of Timo Werner and Erling Braut Håland could join in the summer, with the Manchester side huge admirers of both players. Despite this, Werner has many other teams chasing him, namely Liverpool and Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund may wait to cash in on their Norwegian wonderkid.
Despite this, Jadon Sancho could be set for a move to Manchester in the summer, and it seems certain that they will have a new right-winger at the beginning of 2020/21. Ultimately, the combination of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho is the most likely trio up top for United next season, but the acquisition of a new striker is not out of the picture either.
