Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud is willing to take a significant pay cut to move to Inter Milan this summer, according to Gazetta dello Sport. The Frenchman’s contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of June.
Olivier Giroud Willing to Earn Less Money at Inter Milan
Desperate for a Fresh Start
At the age of 33, Giroud is clearly aware that his career is coming to an end. Therefore, he’s willing to slash his £135,000 a week wages to make a fresh start in the hope of making more of an impact at a new club. He’s only managed five league starts all season.
Inter boss Antonio Conte signed Giroud at Chelsea in 2018. He’s reportedly keen to bring the French World Cup winner to the San Siro as back-up for Romelu Lukaku. The Italian giants are likely to lose striker Lautaro Martinez this summer.
Olivier Giroud Said he was happy at Chelsea
However, in March when first-choice striker Tammy Abraham was injured, Giroud put in some good performances for the Blues. At the time he told the Evening Standard he was happy at the club after a January move away didn’t materialise.
“There are a few weeks [to go], games to win and maybe another trophy,” he said.
“And after I think I have two, three nice seasons in front of me. It’s not the time to talk about contracts. But one more time I will make a decision when it comes.
“It’s behind me. It was a tough month for me. I just spoke with the manager and I believed what he said, that I would get my chance and he has given me my chance.
“I’ve tried to give his confidence back on the pitch. I do my job the best that I can and I’m very happy to be back in the team. Of course, my confidence is better. The transfer window is behind me. I’m a Chelsea player, I’m happy here again and that’s the most important thing.”
