Tottenham could join the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho, according to Darren Lewis of the Daily Mirror.
Tottenham Hotspur Could Enter Tussle for Philippe Coutinho
Chelsea Are Also Interested
The Brazilian has spent this season on loan at Bayern Munich, and Barcelona are offering him to Premier League clubs as they look to offload him. Bayern are reportedly unwilling to make the deal permanent.
Chelsea have been in talks with the Catalan club, who signed the 27-year-old from Liverpool in January 2018. Spurs are also thought to be interested in bringing him back to the Premier League. However, it is thought that Barcelona would be looking to include an obligation to buy clause in any loan deal.
The Blues would prefer a deal with an option to buy. Frank Lampard is worried to commit to paying a high price for a player who has been inconsistent since leaving Liverpool. This could give Spurs an advantage in the race for Coutinho’s signature.
But a deal with an obligation to buy could prove problematic for any club who are interested in him. Owners up and down the country are continuing to fret about the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis. The 27-year-old cost the Catalan club £145 million two years ago, and although his stock has fallen since then as he’s struggled to find his form in La Liga, he still wouldn’t be a cheap buy.
Philippe Coutinho Still Has Plenty of Quality
Although the Brazilian’s recent level of performance hasn’t been on the same level as his form on Merseyside, there’s still no doubt that he’s got a lot to offer. He’s made 22 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern, playing as a number ten on 15 occasions, off the left flank six times and on the right once.
The former Inter man averages 0.5 goals per 90 minutes in the league this campaign. He also has an expected goals average of 0.53, according to Wyscout. Coutinho has chipped in with four assists.
If a Premier League club can get the best out of him, they’ll still have a special talent on their hands.
