Breaking Out at Bayer Leverkusen

Kai Havertz enjoyed a tremendous breakout campaign last season at his boyhood club Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 17 goals. This attracted interest from many of Europe’s top clubs. However, he remained with the German side and while he has not been able to emulate the same sort of quality as last campaign, he has still been very good.

The 20-year-old has already beaten his assist count from last season, with five. He has also netted six times. This has once again made the ears of some of the world’s most elite clubs prick up; Manchester United and Bayern Munich are two of the frontrunners to sign him.

Manchester United Might not Need Kai Havertz

Despite his incredible talent, and bags of potential, Manchester United may not need to sign Havertz.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for young and talented individuals to help him rebuild the United team. Among those to have already joined are Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. But, Bruno Fernandes is who may stop a bid for Havertz.

The 20-year-old’s preferred position is attacking midfield. While he is able to play on the wing, his true talent is down the centre. Bruno Fernandes also plays there, however, making signing him potentially problematic.

This would likely stunt the growth of the German; by not giving him much first-team game time, which he needs in order to develop. Also, it would potentially mean that Bruno Fernandes would not be able to continue his positive impact on the team since joining.

Overall, a move to United may not be the best decision for either part; Havertz seems to understand that with his latest comments.

According to Sky Germany (who also reported before the January transfer window that the 20-year-old would stay at Bayer Leverkusen until at least the summer) Havertz prefers to join Bayern Munich should they come calling rather than Manchester United, saying that he ‘wants’ to sign for Bayern Munich come the opening of the transfer window.
