Manchester United and Jadon Sancho have been closely linked. Sancho has many other potential suitors including Chelsea and Liverpool. Earlier this week it seemed Sancho had chosen United as his destination, but new reports from Dan King of The Sun suggest the race is not yet over. Not only that, but Sancho’s future may be entirely out of United’s hands.
Jadon Sancho Makes Shock Manchester United Transfer Decision
The Sun suggests that playing Champions League football is a major priority for the England international. If the Reds fail to qualify for the Champions League Sancho reportedly plans to snub the Red Devils and choose a new team.
Out of United’s Control
This is bad news for United because it is not entirely in their control. The FA are still working on solutions to decide the final standings of the season because the Coronavirus pandemic, and depending on which solution they choose, United may fail to qualify for the Champions League, without even kicking a ball.
However, even if the FA decide to resume the season, United still may not qualify for the Champions League. Wolves and Sheffield United are only two points behind United, with Tottenham and Arsenal also within five points.
There are also legal battles ensuing that will decide Sancho’s future. Manchester City are banned from European competitions for two years for breaching financial fair play rules. This ban is why United are currently in the Champions League positions. Since City are in second place and they cannot qualify, the Champions League qualifying spots are 1, 3, 4, and 5. However, City are challenging their ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. If they are successful in the courtroom, they will steal United’s Champions League place. Once again, this can be done without the kick of a ball.
Some Good News
Thankfully, there is still some good news for United fans. Chelsea who were also in the race for Sancho have been tipped to swerve on the deal. Former Blues defender Frank Sinclair told GentingBet: “Jadon Sancho is a fantastic player and a great talent but he plays in similar positions to the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Willian. Whether he is a Chelsea target, I don’t know, as Chelsea have more than enough players in those positions that can play in those wide areas or in the No10 role – they have plenty of options. So, I don’t think that it is a position that Chelsea are panicking over but if a player of Jadon’s ability becomes available then you have to look at it. But for me, it’s not a position that Chelsea are desperate for. Is Sancho any better than Hudson-Odoi on that left-hand side?”
Jadon Sancho has enjoyed an amazing season in the Bundesliga. At only 20 years old he has 14 goals and 15 assists for Borussia Dortmund. Sancho would perfectly fill in a major position United are currently lacking in. Their current starting options at right-wing are Daniel James and Mason Greenwood. These two are amazing youngsters with bright futures, but they are not yet at consistent first-team quality.
