West Ham Coronavirus

According to West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady, several of the squad at the London Stadium are showing symptoms of Coronavirus.

‘Mild Symptoms’

Writing in her column in The Sun, Brady confirmed that eight players are currently in self-isolation, complying with Government guidelines.

“Although I am relieved to say they are all showing mild symptoms and, along with their families, seem to be well,” she said.

“But it is no more than a handshake, sneeze or cough away from any of us, so no one should be complacent.

“All the players, including those in self-isolation, are desperate to get back to training and play the games.”

Rise in Coronavirus Cases in Football

Football clubs in England are monitoring their players to ensure that they do not contract coronavirus.

However, the confirmation that several West Ham players are self-isolating is the latest of a growing trend in football. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tested positive for the virus, as did Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi – although he has now fully recovered, according to the BBC.

Furthermore, an unnamed Brighton and Hove Albion player has tested positive for Covid-19.

In the Football League, both Portsmouth and Leyton Orient have confirmed that a number of their players have contracted the virus.

As a result, it has seen football take a backwards step as the world continues to battle the pandemic.

Currently, the Premier League and EFL have suspended all action until April 30. However, a return by that date is looking increasingly unlikely, with solutions as to how to finish the season currently unknown.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, it is becoming more apparent that clubs in the top-flight want to declare the season finished. This would deny Liverpool their first title in 30 years, and see the 2020/2021 begin with the same teams as the 2019/20 season.
