Chris Smalling’s Success in Italy
Smalling has been extremely successful since joining Roma on loan in the summer. The Englishman had failed to impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the 2018/19 season, making a loan move a good option to boost his career. It has done exactly that.
Smalling is a first-choice centre-back for La Magica and has contributed in attack too. The defender has two goals and an assist in Serie A this season, very good for a player who was struggling for game-time just last season. La Lupa are currently fifth, but very close to Champions League qualification, and Smalling has helped them tremendously this season, attracting interest from not just the Italian outfit.
Lots of Teams Interested
Aside from Roma, many Premier League sides are interested in Smalling. The likes of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want the 30-year-old, and United have named their price accordingly. The Red Devils have slapped a £25 million price tag on Smalling’s head, and although Roma are shocked by this having hoped for a deal of under £20 million, they have not renounced their interest.
United’s proposed price takes into account the interest from many sides with the competition for his signature likely to drive his price up to their preferred amount. They are also reluctant to sell him cheap, having let another out-of-favour centre-back Johnny Evans go for just £6 million in 2015.

Should United manage to sell Smalling this summer, they could, reportedly, make their move for long-time target Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegalese central defender is currently one of the world’s best. He is exceptional at passing and tackling, and would fit perfectly into United’s team next to Harry Maguire.
They recently received a boost in their chase for his signature too, with the 28-year-old reportedly ready to leave Napoli, and he could join in the summer for a club-record fee of £93 million, four million more than the current record of £89 million for Paul Pogba in 2016.
