Manchester United could further extend Nemanja Matic’s contract extension by giving him a new one, according to Daniel Cutts of The Sun.
REPORT: Manchester United to Negotiate Further Nemanja Matic Contract Extension
The New Contract
According to the report, United will offer the Serbian a fresh 2-year deal worth £140,000 a week. Less than a week ago, the Red Devils triggered a one-year extension in Matic’s contract. However, new reports are suggesting that they could now be going further than that, offering him a full new deal.
Matic Deserves a New Contract
This season Manchester United have struggled with injuries, especially in midfield.
Paul Pogba, whose future remains very uncertain, has appeared just eight times for the Red Devils this season. A recurring ankle injury has kept him out for most of the campaign, and the lack of creativity hit them hard in the first half of 2019/20. Since Bruno Fernandes’ arrival, things have looked up, however, the return of Pogba will still be a huge boost.
Furthermore, Scott McTominay has spent some of the season on the sidelines. United missed his commanding influence at the beginning of 2020, as United won just one of their first five games of the year.
With these two out, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called upon an experienced Nemanja Matic. The 31-year-old was unavailable through injury for a lot of 2019, however, he returned at the beginning of the calendar year. He has helped them defensively, with four clean sheets in their last five games. Furthermore, his experience has worked wonders in an extremely youthful Manchester United side.
While Matic is past his peak, and the Red Devils are not looking to keep him as a starter, he is still a great depth player who can come into the team when called upon and exude quality. Nemanja Matic deserved his contract extension before, and a new two-year deal is now on the table for the Serbian midfielder.
