Manchester United are looking to sign Swiss defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to the Express.
Manchester United Looking to Sign Defensive Midfielder Denis Zakaria
Who is Denis Zakaria?
Denis Zakaria has shown much promise in the Bundesliga this season. He is a 23-year-old defensive midfielder who currently plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach and has been particularly impressive this campaign.
He joined Die Fohlen in the summer of 2017 and has since become a consistent starter for the German outfit. This season, however, has been more successful for the Swiss international. He has looked commanding in the middle of the park and has helped them to 4th place and a potential Champions League venture for next season.
Despite his help, Zakaria may not be there with them next season, with interest having arisen from teams like German giants Bayern Munich, and the Red Devils.
Why are Manchester United Looking to Sign this Defensive Midfielder?
Manchester United need a defensive midfielder to help in the rebuild currently taking place there. The Red Devils are looking to challenge for the title by 2022, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is building a young side with this goal. Having already signed, according to Ryan Giggs, ‘a young Cristiano Ronaldo’, in Daniel James, star players Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Bruno Fernandes on permanent deals, as well as nurturing the likes of Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood into first-team players, Solskjaer will look to continue his success with Zakaria.
United missed out on signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri last summer to noisy neighbours Manchester City. With an Aging Nemanja Matic the only other true defensive midfielder, the Red Devils need to buy one. Scott McTominay is also capable of playing there, however, he is comfortable in a more central role. Zakaria could provide Manchester United with a young, but quality, defensive midfielder, who could be a star of the future.
