Daniele Rugani of Juventus has been tested as positive for Coronavirus, according to Fabrizio Romano. He is the first player at the club to be confirmed as positive for Covid-19.
Daniele Rugani Coronavirus Test Returns as Positive
The 25-year-old Italian centre-back is not yet showing any symptoms of the disease. The Sun reports that Serie C team Pianese, who played the under-23’s at Juventus, were infected with the pathogen; the manager and three players are currently coronavirus positive, with the whole squad currently in isolation. Although, The Sun also points out that Juventus are located in the most infected northern area of Italy.
But, Juventus acted quickly after this news, placing their under 23’s in isolation and cancelling training. Nevertheless, Rugani has coronavirus and the club are acting accordingly and will isolate those with close contact with the player.
Serie A has been suspended temporarily, but may not reach a conclusion. It is in the best interest of public health and safety that the league may not finish. After all, in large crowds, it is so easy for the virus to spread. Furthermore, with the now all too evident results of the smaller matches, like the under-23’s against a Serie C team, shows that the disease will spread regardless of closed-door fixtures. Thus, the league remains suspended.
Amidst what is now a pandemic, the figure of a football player contracting Covid-19 pales in comparison to the 12,000 confirmed cases and 827 deaths in Italy. Italy has now closed all shops except food stores and pharmacies as further restrictions and precautions are taken to try to counter the contagion. For now, the virus sidelines football, its players must be careful as any other citizen in doing their best to isolate, practice good hygiene and stay calm during this outbreak.
