Charlton majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer has left the club just two months after his and East Street Investment’ takeover of the Addicks. It comes after he’s been locked in a dispute with chairman Matt Southall. Southall issued a statement on the club website that said: “Following the events of March 9th, his position is now untenable and the board has no option but to accept his resignation.”
“The board of Charlton Athletic and the Senior Management Team will continue to run the club with its best long-term interests at heart.”
Charlton Athletic Director Tahnoon Nimer Resigns
Boardroom Chaos
Nimer made a number of accusations on an Instagram post against Southall. In the post, which has since been deleted, he hinted that he was going to pull out of the club. Southall has accused Nimer of not investing any of the funds he promised.
The Charlton chairman also alleges that Nimer threatened senior management with legal action over a row about an attempt to appoint a new chief executive. And, Southall said that the director has been trying to buy Romanian side Dinamo Bucharest.
It also seems the pair have been locked in a dispute about the contract Lee Bowyer signed in January.
Nimer claims that the contract offered to Bowyer was “disadvantageous” – which Southall disagrees with.
Statement
Last night, Southall issued a lengthy statement on the club website.
“On Monday, Tahnoon Nimer sent an incredibly damaging letter on behalf of Panorama Magic General Contracting LLC to members of the club’s Senior Management Team. In the letter, he made allegations about me and my conduct, which my lawyers immediately rebutted.
“It has been brought to my attention that he has repeated and expanded upon the malicious falsehoods made in the initial letter. I will now be meeting with my lawyers to discuss an action for defamation. However, my immediate priority is to protect the club and its staff from these damaging statements.”
More Uncertainty for Addicks Fans
Charlton fans have endured years of boardroom unrest. Previous chairman Roland Duchatelet, who spent five years at the Valley, was incredibly unpopular. In his time he introduced cost-cutting measures. They were relegated to League One in 2016.
Furthermore, he tried influencing former manager Chris Powell‘s team selection in 2014. As well as this, he brought in poor players from his former club Standard Liege. He also banished bottled water from the academy in an attempt to cut costs.
Addicks fans were then understandably delighted when East Street Investments and Panorama bought the club. They hoped this would be a promising new era for the London club. But things are unravelling very quickly at the Valley. Where do they go from here?
