Steven Bergwijn has become the latest Tottenham Hotspur forward to pick up an injury. The Netherlands international will join Harry Kane and Son Heung-min on the sidelines after picking up an ankle knock against Burnley.

Problems Mounting

Bergwijn is expected to be out for a “significant period” according to the club’s website. The 22-year-old picked up the knock in the closing stages of Spurs’ 1-1 draw away at Burnley at the weekend.

The January signing, along with teammate Ben Davies, did not train this morning with Spurs and he will miss the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against RB Leipzig this week.

Spurs currently trail the tie after a Timo Werner penalty gave Leipzig a 1-0 advantage and an away goal in the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He becomes the third forward missing for Spurs, with star man Kane and also Son missing through injuries.

A statement on the club’s website read: “Following assessment and examination by our medical team, we can confirm that Steven Bergwijn suffered a significant sprain to his left ankle during our match against Burnley.

“The Netherlands international will now undergo an extended period of rehabilitation where his progress will continue to be assessed.”

Kane Back Outside

In a positive turn of events for Spurs at least, Kane appears to be ahead of schedule in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The forward was involved in some of the passing drills at training today and also took part in rehabilitation activities as he pushes ever close to a return to Jose Mourinho’s squad.

It was expected originally that he would miss the remainder of the season and his participation at Euro 2020 was even thrown into doubt at one stage.
