Dortmund Head the Queue

However, Dortmund appear to be in pole position to sign the talented midfielder from Birmingham City for a fee in the region of £30 million. Bellingham’s contract with Birmingham expires in June 2021 but a transfer to Dortmund this summer appears to be close.

The 16-year-old would suit Dortmund’s philosophy of buying and developing younger players. The Bundesliga club already has English forward Jadon Sancho (19), USA’s Giovanni Reyna (17) and striker Erling Haaland (19) in their ranks.

The fee would be Dortmund’s second-highest-paid for a player. Dortmund paid £33 million for defender Mats Hummels in 2019.

Why is There Interest in Jude Bellingham?

Bellingham broke into the first team at Birmingham this season under Pep Clotet. He scored four goals and provided three assists and is a regular for the Blues, making 31 appearances so far.

The Birmingham academy graduate scored two in his first two starts for the club earlier in the season, including the winner in the 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic in September.

Since then, the teenager has been a regular feature for Clotet’s side in the second tier of English football. He shows a maturity to his game, often working back to defend, winning the ball back and distributing the ball well for his side.

Bellingham has also shown his adaptability this season, playing anywhere across the midfield for Birmingham. The talented youngster is, more often than not, deployed right in the centre of midfield by Clotet. He has, though, been found in a more defensive role and sometimes further forward too.

At just 16 as well, there is plenty of time for Bellingham to either hone in on one position or become more versatile and play elsewhere across the pitch.
