Manchester United could Sell David de Gea this summer, according to talkSPORT. This would fund a spending spree in their effort to rebuild the squad.
Manchester United Could Sell David de Gea
Quality Goalkeeping for United
David de Gea has been a loyal servant to his club since he joined in 2011. He has been their first-choice goalkeeper for the vast majority of his time with the Red Devils, however, after much speculation in past years, it looks that de Gea may finally be on his way out of Manchester.
When de Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid, he became the second most expensive goalkeeper in history. His start to life in England, however, did not quite live up to the price tag, with the then 21-year old making many mistakes early in his Manchester United career.
This changed within the Spaniard’s first season there, and he started emerging as one of the greatest keepers in the world. David de Gea has produced countless saves of a world-class standard while with United, winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award a record four times. His performances have been exemplary, however, he has been very close to moves away on multiple occasions.
Strong Links to Moves Abroad
It seems that every summer window, David de Gea is being linked with a transfer to one of Europe’s top clubs.
De Gea came closest to a move away in 2015 when he was seconds from joining Real Madrid. The two European giants had been in talks for much of the window, and it seemed that they had finally come to an agreement when the transfer was all but done on deadline day. However, the deal never went through, and the Madrid side accused United of holding up the deal by not sending the paperwork on time. While this delighted United fans, it was difficult for de Gea. He did not play in the league until October, but following the failed transfer, he had one of the seasons of his life.
David de Gea’s Inconsistent Form Recently
While United have struggled in recent years, David de Gea has most often stepped up. That, however, has not been the case this season.
The Spaniard has looked shaky at times, with two mistakes leading directly to goals this season, including a shocker against Watford. Despite this, he has not conceded in his last four appearances and may be starting to return to his former greatness.
Although de Gea is still one of the world’s best between the sticks, United have many viable alternatives at their fingertips.
Manchester United Have Many Options in Goal
Manchester United have many top quality goalkeepers on their books.
Sergio Romero is arguably the best back-up goalkeeper in the world and has demonstrated on multiple occasions that he is capable of performing at a high level against top-quality opposition.
Dean Henderson, 23, is also performing admirably on loan at Sheffield United. He has the third-most clean sheets in the Premier League this season (nine), and is only one behind the leaders. The young Englishman will be eager to prove himself as first choice Manchester United goalkeeper, and he has shown while with the Blades that he is more than capable of playing in the top flight of English football.
If United sell de Gea is seems likely that Henderson would return from loan as United’s number one.
Funding Summer Transfers
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will look to strengthen United’s squad in the summer. He has already made four extremely successful signings for the Red Devils and has his eye on a few more.
Jadon Sancho is a long term target of United’s with the English teenager already one of the best players in the Bundesliga.
Furthermore, young English playmakers James Maddison and Jack Grealish have been on the club’s radar this season. The Red Devils may make a move for Grealish soon and could bring in Maddison in the summer as well. This would make for some large squad improvements, but would also cost a lot.
