Robert Lewandowski will miss up to four weeks after sustaining a left knee injury during Bayern Munich’s victory over Chelsea. Lewandowski is leading the Bundesliga with 25 goals, so how will Bayern compensate for the absence of their star striker?
Robert Lewandowski Picks Up Knee Injury
Bayern’s Title Under Threat
In Lewandowski’s decade long stay in the Bundesliga, he has only missed 16 games, and never more than four in a season. Lewandowski will miss games against Hoffenheim, Ausburg, Union Berlin and Frankfurt. He will also miss the second leg of the Chelsea tie, and the DFB Cup quarter-final against Schalke.
Bayern are only a point clear at the top of the table, so all points are vital at this stage. Lewandowski’s absence might play a big role in the title race. Bayern are heavily reliant on their Polish international; at times they rely on him too much. For example, in their last Bundesliga game against Paderborn, who are currently sitting at the bottom of the table, Bayern only scraped away with the three points after two goals from Lewandowski, including an 88th-minute winner.
The competition is only getting better as Borussia Dortmund are on a convincing run of form, led by new signing Erling Haaland, so Bayern have to stay at their best.
A Champions League Exit?
In their recent Champions League match at Stamford Bridge Robert Lewandowski scored and provided two assists, being a major player in Bayern’s 3-0 win. With Lewandowski missing the home leg, could the Blues stage an upset for the history books? It seems unlikely, but the Pole is such a major player for the German side, that it just might be possible.
The Personal Records of Robert Lewandowski
Lewandowski is also chasing some personal goals and records, which might be hindered by this injury. Gerd Muller’s record of 40 goals in one season is under threat, as Lewandowski has 25 goals in this campaign. It may not happen though, as he will be missing four weeks. Lewandowski is also chasing the Bundesliga’s golden boot, but Timo Werner isn’t far behind with 21 and seems destined to catch up while the Pole is injured.
